Bipasha BasuOne of the hottest examples of a supermodel turning into a super actress is Bipasha Basu. The bombshell was born on January 7, 1979 in New Delhi in a Bengali family. Bipasha was second of three daughters in the family and was brought up in Kolkatta. Bipasha loves her folks and they lovingly call her Bonny. Bipasha did her schooling at the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan where she took up science in class XI and XII. After schooling, she did her graduation in commerce. The intelligent student was considered ugly till the age of 14 for her dark complexion and anti-anorexic figure. The ugly duckling was soon to transform into an internationally acclaimed beauty.

Bipasha started her career as a model at the age of 17. Her first claim to fame was as the winner of the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest. She then had to participate in an international contest in Florida where she finished up as the second runners up. The contest made the world famous fashion photographer Steven Mizhel notice this bong beauty. No sooner than he noticed her was she on the covers of the fashion magazine Vogue. She did a few campaigns abroad but started feeling homesick and finally returned to India.

In India, she started modeling for the ramp as well as TV commercials. You would remember this dusky beauty in ads for Lakme, Close-up, Pantene and so on. During this time she also chose to appear in a music video of the song ‘Tu’ from Sonu Nigam’s album Kismat. The song and video became a rage. There had been no dearth of offers for Bipasha ever since she started modeling. However, she had been resistant towards entering Bollyood. Her resistance came to an end with her debut in 2001 in the movie Ajnabee. The movie was much in discussion about being based on the controversial subject of wife swapping and did moderately well at the box office. Bipasha, however, was noticed for her excellent performance in a negative role and bestowed with the Filmfare award for best debut.

In 2002, her most noticeable movie was Raaz in which she starred with then boyfriend Dino Moreo. Although, Bips, as she called in the industry circles, and Dino made a hot pair, the relationship did not last very long. After a series of some not very impressive movies in 2002, she again shot into limelight with her sensual act in Jism in 2003. Her Jism co-star John Abraham also became her real life boyfriend and they are ‘hopefully’ still going steady – though recent rumors would have you believe otherwise!

2004 saw her in around five inconsequential movies. But the sex symbol bounced back with a bang in a comic flick No Entry in 2005. She was also nominated best supporting actress for No Entry in the Filmfare awards. From the sex symbol image in 2001 and 2002, to the comedian in 2005, Bipasha showed her versatility by doing some serious cinema in 2006’s movie Corporate. She was praised by the critics for her role in Corporate and also won a nomination for best actress in the Filmfare awards. After playing a sophisticated corporate executive in 2006, she again had an image makeover in 2006 to a rusty village belle in the movie Omkara. Her song Beedi became a rage and is played at every party, function, wedding in the town even today. Bipasha has performed this supposedly raunchy number so aesthetically that even grown-ups don’t mind dancing on it!

Omkara was followed some more enjoyable movies, such as Phir Hera Pheri, Darna zaroori Hai and a double role in Dhoom 2. In 2007, the girl who never used her own voice in her initial movies was the host of the New 7 Wonders of the world’ event along with personalities of repute such as Ben Kingsley and Hillary Swank. 2007 and 2008 would see her in some more impressive projects such as Raaz 2 and International Hera Pheri – I’m sure you all love Bipsha and will wait to reward her hard work.
