The child of two legendry personalities in the world of cinema, an accomplished Bharatnatyam dancer, and a talented actress – I am not talking about three different people but one person named Esha Deol. She is the elder daughter of one of the most famous Bollywood couples, the charming he-man Dharmendra and the dreamgirl Hema Malini. Esha was born on the 2nd of November, 1982 in Mumbai. She and younger sister Ahana were brought up in a strict but loving environment by their parents.
Esha did her schooling from the Jamnabai Narsee School. A shy child, she was really into sports during her school days and a part of the various teams such as basketball and football. Apparently, Esha has done her graduation in computer applications and then went to Oxford to earn a masters degree in Media Arts. Apart from studies and sports, her other obvious passion was dance. Esha loves dancing and has been trained in Bharatnatyam by Hema Malini herself! She also learned the dance forms Kuchipudi and Odissi making a flexible, graceful, and skillful dancer. Having been brought up in an environment that thrived on Bollywood, Esha always wanted to make acting her career. She belonged to the film fraternity and joining Bollywood was implicit.
Despite her parents’ initial reluctance, Esha started her acting career with Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche in 2002. Her foray into Bollywood was preceded by training in acting and Hindi diction. In Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche, she played a traumatized character named Esha. The movie did not do very well at the box office but won her the Filmfare best debut award and loads of attention from the audience. At this time, as an actress, Esha won mixed reactions by the audience and the critics. One of the reasons for the mixed reaction was the rich lineage which she was expected to uphold. In every movie of Esha, the audience expected to see a reflection of Hema Mailini. However, Esha was another individual in her own right and the audience was yet to accept her that way.
Her initial 2 years in the industry were tough and her movies were bombing at the box office. A noticeable event in 2003 was when she was bestowed the national award for being a part of the movie LOC Kargil, which was a movie of national importance. Despite flops, the media shy but tough girl did not give up and delivered excellent performances in Yuva and Dhoom in 2004. She had worked hard on her looks and toned body for Dhoom and her efforts were rewarded. As though Dhoom was a lucky charm, a string of hits followed in Kaal, Dus, No Entry, with a few duds in between over 2004 and 2005. Esha’s fluency in Tamil also won her Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film, Aayitha Ezhuthu in 2004.
That she is versatile was proved when she accepted a negative role in the film Ankahee in 2006. The movie itself did not fare well at the box office, however, Esha was nominated in the Filmfare best villain category for her tremendous performance. In 2007, the lovely Esha will be working or seen in some much awaited movies such as Dhoom 3, Cash, Honeymoon, Just Married, and Darling. In 2008, she would also be working in a sequel to No Entry.
The style conscious Esha loves to cut her hair herself and is very cautious about her clothes. She works out regularly to keep herself fit and toned. However, if she learns to become more media-friendly and choose her roles more carefully, she would have a long way to go and make her legendry parents proud of her.
