Kajol (Mukherjee) Devgan, better known in the film industry as Kajol and Kads at home, is one of the most versatile and talented actresses in Bollywood. She was born on the 5th of August 1975 into a family where acting was a treasured heritage passed from one generation to another. The talent- rich family lineage includes Tanuja (actress, mother), Shomu Mukherjee (producer , father), Shobhna Samarth (actress, maternal grandmother), Rattan Bhai (actress, maternal great grandmother), Sashadhar Mukherjee (producer and director, paternal grandfather), Joy Mukherjee (actor, paternal uncle), just to name a few. With such richness in the family, Kajol’s love for movies is explicable.
Kajol’s family were very well-off and she and younger sister Tanisha had an enjoyable childhood. As a child, Kajol loved playing pranks and watching cartoons. As she grew up reading became a passion that still persists. During later years, splitting of parents Tanuja and Shomu might have disturbed the two sisters but Kajol was strong and confident and moved on with life’s normal course. She quit school at the age of seventeen and turned towards Bollywood to pursue her hobby – acting. Despite her dark complexion, heavier built, and lack of ‘from the fairy tales’ look, Kajol had the confidence to contemplate and accomplish a foothold in the world of commercial cinema. Her effervescent laughter, attractive eyes, loads of confidence, and love for acting made her a charismatic Bollywood actress.
Despite being selective about the roles that she selects, Kajol has an impressive career graph. Kajol’s acting career started in 1992 with the film Bekhudi. Though the film did not leave any impact on the audience, it prepared them to notice the unconventional but extremely spontaneous actress. 1993 brought Kajol the much deserved fame with Bazigaar. It also brought her Shahrukh Khan! Kajol and Shakrukh became a rage as an onscreen couple with their sparking chemistry in movies such as Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaenge, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Today Kajol and Shahrukh Khan are very close friends and the audience waits to see them together in more movies.
Apart from Shahrukh Khan, another actor with whom Kajol loves to work is Ajay Devgan, who has been her co-star in movies such as Ishq, Raju Chacha, and Payar To Hona Hi Tha. Ajay, is also the love of her life and husband. Kajol and Ajay fell in love during the making of a film and after a five year long courtship they tied the knot on the 24th of February 1999. After the birth of a beautiful daughter named Nysa Kajol took a break from her career. Having enjoyed the bliss of motherhood, she made a power-packed comeback with Fanaa. This was her first ever movie with Aamir Khan where she played a blind girl with panache. The movie was a superhit. Kajol is now involved with a few prject but considers the real-life role of a mother as her paramount prirotity. Two of her awaited films include U, Me, Aur Hum, which also marks the inception of Ajay Devgan’s career as a director, and Om Shanti Om. Like most other stars, Kajol has also obliged the small screen viewers by making appearances in television commercials and shows such as KBC, Indian Idol, and Koffee with Karan.
In her entire career, Kajol has done a lot of worthwhile work. In addition, to the following, love, and blessings of her fans, her hard-work has been rewarded in the form of umpteen nominations for varying awards and a large number of victories. She stands apart in having won 4 Filmfare awards for the best actress, which is just second to the best innings of Nutan who won 5 Filmfare awards for the best actress. She was also the first female actor to win an award for the category of the best villain for her superhit movie Gupt. An accomplished actress herself, Kajol dreams of making Nysa a much more successful actress than her in the future - all we can say is amen!
