Kareena Kapoor or Bebo, as her fans sometimes call her, was born to the Kapoor film family on September 21, 1980 in Mumbai as the second child of her parents, actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita. Kareena happens to be the great granddaughter of the pioneer of Indian cinema, Prithviraj Kapoor. She is the granddaughter of the legendary actor and film maker Raj Kapoor. Her elder sister Karishma Kapoor was a popular actress and Rishi Kapoor is her uncle. Kareena, wanting to be an actress like her sister, trained under Kishore Namit Kapoor for one year.
Kareena’s first film was set to be Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai in 2000, however a few days into shooting Kareena realized that it was more of a launch for Hrithik Roshan and not a movie for her and hence abandoned the project under her mother’s influence. Finally, her career commenced with Refugee in 2000 which was a moderate success but earned Kareena rave reviews. For her performance in Refugee she won her first Filmfare Award in the Best Female Debut category. In 2001, her breakthrough film Mujhe Kuchh Kehna Hai was released and became one of the biggest hits of the year. However, subsequent movies like Yaadein and Asoka did not garner much success at the box office. Kareena’s performance in Asoka as a princess was acclaimed and she earned a nomination of Best Actress in Filmfare. Later that same year, she starred in Ajnabee, a thriller and the film went on to become one of the highest grossing films that year. Her last release of the year was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, a huge multi-starrer which again was one of the highest grossing films of the year and was one of the biggest hits overseas. It earned Kareena a nomination for the Best Supporting Actress at Filmfare awards. After these hits, Kareena was established as one of the most successful stars.
Kareena was in high demand and a lot of her movies were released, including Mujhse Dosti Karogi but most of them were not hits and were in no comparison to her earlier movies. Another flopped movie was Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon in 2003. It however did well overseas. Now, the critics had begun to criticize Kareena for taking far too many repetitious kind of roles and was being called inexperienced and synthetic. But in 2004 came the turning point with Chameli. Kareena played the role of a prostitute in Chameli and her performance earned her the Filmfare Special Performance Award. Her next release Dev was critically acclaimed. For her portrayal of a victim of riots, Kareena won the Filmfare Critics Award For Best Performance as well as several nominations for Best Actress in several award functions. Kareena played a negative role for the first time in Fida.
Even though the film failed to do well, the actress received a very positive response and good reviews for her performance. Later that same year, Kareena played her first comic role in the semi-hit Hulchul and won good reviews for it. Another success that same year was her movie Aitraaz. In 2005, she starred in Bewafaa where she plays the role of a woman who marries her sister’s husband after her death but then sets on an extra marital affair. Kareena received mixed reviews for this movie. The first release of 2006, 36 China Town did moderately well at the box office and was followed by Chup Chup Ke which was again a moderate suucess. However, her performance in Omkara was praised and it won her a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance as well as a Star Screen Award for Best Actress. Kareena did an item number in the movie Don - The Chase Begins Again. In 2007, her release Jab We Met was a success.
Kareena was dating actor Shahid Kapoor in 2004 and was involved in a scandal when an onlooker filmed them kissing in a hotel and released the video to the news. The couple broke up in 2007, though initially it was thought that it was a publicity gimmick for Jab We Met, but later it was confirmed that they had indeed separated. In 2007, she was rumoured to be dating actor Saif Ali Khan and a few days later Kareena confirmed it.
