Karisma Kapoor or Lolo as she is lovingly known, was born to the illustrious Kapoor film family of Bollywood on 25th June, 1974.
Karisma’s debut film was Prem Qaidi in 1991 which was a semi-hit. Most of her films in 1992 to 1996 failed to do well at the box office, however some of them like Jigar, Anari, Raja Babu and Jeet did well. In 1996 Karisma played the female lead in Raja Hindustani which was the highest grossing movie of the year. The actress won her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for Raja Hindustani. The following year, she was part of the super hit Dil To Pagal Hai. Her performance in Dil To Pagal Hai won her FIlmfare Best Supporting Actress Award and also the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 1999, Karisma Kapoor starred in four hit movies.
The comedy film Biwi No. 1 became the biggest hit of the year. The next movie, another comedy film Haseena Maan Jayegi was a huge success and Karisma was now an established actress. Following this, she was part of the movie Hum Saath Saath Hain which also resulted in a hit. Her last release that year, Jaanwar was another box office hit and she was considered to be one of the most successful actresses that year. In 2000, Karisma was part of Fiza. Her performance in the movie surprised critics and the actress won her second Filmfare Best Actress Award. In 2001, she received critical acclaim for her movie Zubeidaa and it garnered her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. Also, her performance in Shakti – The Power was highly appreciated and earned her nominations for the Best Actress category. She also played the leading role in the television series Karishma : A Miracle of Destiny in 2003. After her film Baaz in 2003, she took a break from acting.
Karishma has been romantically involved with actors Ajay Devgan and Abhishek Bachchan. In fact, she announced her engagement to Abhishek Bachchan in 2002 but four months later they split up. In September 2003, Karishma got married to industrialist Sanjay Kapur. After the birth of her daughter, there was a rift between the couple but they subsequently patched up.
In 2006, Karisma starred in her comeback movie Mere Jeevan Saathi in which she played a negative role. In the recently released Om Shanti Om, Karisma has made a special appearance along with several other stars. Karishma was supposed to star in the movie Zamaanat but the production has been delayed.
